US FDA has approved a new treatment for actinic keratosis, a precursor to skin cancer. Picato gel (Ingenol mebutate) approved in Jan 2012, needs to be applied for only 2 to 3 days. Ingenol mebutate, derived from the Australian plant Euphorbia peplus, acts by inducing cell death.

A single dose of zoster vaccine is recommended for adults aged 60 years and older regardless of whether they report a prior episode of shingles. Zoster vaccine is recently approved by the U.S. FDA for administration to persons 50 years of age and older. But, Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices continues to recommend that vaccination begin at age 60 years. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Benlysta (belimumab) to treat systemic lupus erythematosus on March 9, 2011. Benlysta inhibits B-lymphocyte stimulator protein, which may reduce the number of abnormal B cells thought to be a problem in lupus. Benlysta is the first new lupus therapy approved in over 50 years.

Azzalure: Botulinum toxin recently launched in the UK; significantly cheaper than Botox. Azzalure, because of its smaller molecular size, may diffuse in the tissue away from the injection site to cause droopy eyelid.
Sun block: Ideal Sun screen should be of SPF 30. (SPF 30 blocks 97 % of UVB; Sunscreen with higher SPF does not provide longer protection.) Sun screen should be broad spectrum (which blocks UVA & UVB). The sunscreen starts working only 30 minutes after it is applied. Sunscreen should be reapplied every three hours.
Use 1 mg sunscreen per square centimeter surface area. 400 mg of sunscreen is required to cover the whole face.
Sunscreens for children should contain zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. Sunscreen containing oxybenzone, an endocrine disruptor, is not suitable for them.
Cloth as Sun Block: Fabrics with darker or more intense colors are much better at blocking ultra violet rays. Dark blue offer the best protection and yellow colored cotton offer the least protection.
Eyelash enhancer drug: Bimatoprost is currently used to treat glaucoma, a dangerous eye disease. One of the side effects of the medicine is "to make the eyelashes of patients longer and fuller." Now the side effect is utilized to produce an eyelash enhancer drug. The drug is named Latisse and marketed by Allergan pharmaceuticals.
* Glaucoma is a disease where the pressure inside the eye ball increased.
* Bimatoprost is a prostaglandin analog
Isopropyl cloprostenate, a prostaglandin analogue like bimatoprost is also claimed to enhance eyelash. Eyelash serum containing Isopropyl cloprostenate is marketed in the US.
Vaniqa (eflornithine topical) is the only US FDA approved medication to decrease hair growth. Its active ingredient is eflornithine hydrochloride, interferes with an enzyme that causes hair to grow
Approximately 30 percent of the population believe they have food allergies. The true incidence of food allergies is only about eight percent for children and less than five percent for adults. Journal of the American Medical Association
Food allergy is routinely over diagnosed. Lab tests for food allergy are not specific. Roughly 50% of patients with a questionable history and positive test result will not have true food allergy. Food challenge is the gold standard in diagnosis. JAMA 2010
Symptoms of food allergy: Redness, itching, rash on skin; Watering, and itching of eye; Itching or congestion of the nose; Diarrhea, abdominal pain, cramping or vomiting; Swelling; Breathing difficulty, wheezing and chest tightness indicate a serious allergic reaction.
